I am totally thrilled with how these fabulous stockings have turned out! Inspiration for them came from a stocking I recently saw on American Heritage, by the time I got around to viewing Kathy's seasonal goodies a fair few of her new offerings had already sold including a stocking similar to these. I was quite disappointed as I would have so liked to have seen the festive stocking hanging over my make do chair. Not one to accept defeat, I decided to set too and have a go at making one, so delighted I was with the end result I thought why not make a few more to offer here on the selling blog and here they are!

Each stocking is sewn and grubbyed then clean rag stuffed to give shape definition. The heels and toes are cut from contrasting fabric and hand stitched in place. In the top of each stocking is a festive arrangement of freshly picked, ivy, spruce and laurel, cut from the bushes in the fields next door to our cottage. Each stocking hangs approx 33 inches including the loop hanger.

Olde Thyme Santa's

Pattern By Hidden In The Attic

The Santa's bodies are made from calico, stuffed and aged, with weighted bottoms allowing them to stand without support. They have pinch stitched noses, brown floss eyes and Wensleydale fleece wool for hair and beards. They have painted dark brown gloved hands and they each stand approx 12.5 inches high.

Starting from left to right, the first Santa wears a wool brown and green check coat with a matching cape and a cream trim on the hood and down the front of the coat. In his hands he holds a sack of little green apples (the apples have been made from clay with rusty wire stalks, then painted).

Next to him stands a vintage style Santa, wearing an off white fleece coat and hood, with a red check trim to the hood. Round his waist is a red check belt and tucked in it is a candy cane. This Santa holds a sack of small red apples (apples made as before)

Third in the row is a Santa wearing a grey wool coat and hood with a navy trim down the centre of the coat and around the edge of the hood. In his hands he holds a sack of coal and a couple of grubbyed candy canes (coal made as per the apples)

Christmas of Yesterday Santa

Fabulous Santa, designed to hang, he would make a wonderful prim addition to your seasonal decor. He is made from calico, sewn stuffed and aged. He has a pinch stitched nose, floss eyes and wensleydale wool for his hair and beard.

The hat is made from brown flecked wool and there is a small rusty bell hand stitched to the end. His coat is made from a rich dark brown wool flannel fabric and round his waist is a grunged jute belt.

Fastened to the belt is an aged paper tag, from the belt hangs a small rusty key and bell and fastened to his right twig hand is a grunged candy cane. Hanging from his left twig hand is a sack of coal (the coal is made from clay and painted). Finally his brown flecked wool trousers are tucked inside his handmade leather boots!

He really has been a labour of love!

Sara is a pattern that I have had for quite some years and whilst searching for inspiration I came across her hiding at the back of the pattern folder.

She wears a barn red check dress, her wings and egg are made from a piece of antique quilt and fastened to one ear is a strip of fabric to match her dress.

Her angel wings are secured in place with a red wooden button. Sara has been designed to hang with a floss loop at the back of her head.

Overall Sara is approx 14.5 inches long and the width of her wings are approx 10 inches, all of the fabrics have been aged for a time worn look. Thanks to Moonchild's Primitives for the egg pattern bought when I first started primmin' some 4 years ago.

"Jack" and his spring harvest is taken from the Kentucky Primitives pattern for Farmer Jack The Rabbit Autumn Harvest, I just changed the item Jack holds from a bucket to a sack of carrots.

Jack wears a printed cotton shirt with two small green buttons hand sewn to the front and a cheesecloth scarf. His trousers are made from green check fabric and are held up with a jute belt. He has stick arms and legs and hand stitched facial features. Round his neck is a sack of carrots, the sack is made from antique quilt and the three carrots are made from orange check fabric with sweet annie tops. Finally a small rusty bell is secured to the carrot sack with a rusty safety pin. All the fabrics have been aged and Jack has a OOAK card, signed and dated, tucked into his carrot sack.

Overall Jack measures approx 16 inches long and is designed to be hung.

This Peter Rabbit's body is made from grey wool, clean rag stuffed with a vintage button hand sewn to the front. I have used rusty square head nails for the arms and legs; you can just see raw sheep’s wool poking out from out of the coat sleeves and the bottom of the trousers. He wears a grey wool pinstripe coat with two small rusty bells for buttons and a rusty safety pin clipped round the bells, I thought this looked a bit like a "gentleman of yesteryear's" pocket watch chain. His scarf is cut from the same fabric as the coat.

Peter Rabbit's hat is made from the same fabric that I used for the coat, round the brim is a small strip of muslin. He has hand stitched facial detailing and all the fabrics have been aged.

Overall he hangs approx 14 inches in length.

The very first prim patterns I bought were part of a book by Donna Veal of Moonchild's Primitives. I had looked at many other prim artists work and wondered how on earth they got the fabulous items they made to look the way they did, all old and worn, I had no idea how to mix a batch of coffee stain, I was a complete novice. Coffee Stained Kisses was my bible when I first ventured into the world of hand made prims I referred to it constantly. Donna, helped me out such a lot in the early days, offering me support, encouragement and advice, never once did she turn me away when I had a problem or a question. I shall always be eternally grateful to her for offering me a guiding hand as I ventured into the wonderful world of prim. The egg pattern used here is from one of many in her book.

Every home should have a few egg bowl fillers dotted around for spring, these come as a set of five, three made from aged grey wool and the other two made from blue check grubbyed flannel. Each egg has been given feather stitch detail, even the grey ones and they rest on nest of excelsior moss, which comes with the eggs.

The eggs range in size from 4 to 3.5 inches.

Santa is made from calico, stuffed and aged with a weighted bottom allowing him to stand without support. He has a pinch stitched nose, brown floss eyes and Wensleydale fleece wool for the hair and beard. His coat and hood are made from 100% Scottish Tweed Wool fabric.

Tucked in his right arm is a spray of sweet annie with red berries and standing in front of him is a sheep made from warm and natural quilt batting with stick legs, painted face and a small rusty bell hanging from the sheep's neck.

Nestled in his left arm is a smaller sheep.

Overall this Santa stands approx 17.5 inches high

These little dolls are just the perfect size for adding a little bit of primitive charm to any home.

She is made from calico, clean rag stuffed and aged. Her bonnet is from a piece of dark brown repro civil war print fabric, her dress is bottle green homespun and her apron is made from plain calico.

Overall she measures approx 9.5 inches, seated she is a mere 5.5 inches high.

Pioneer Style Homestead Doll & Her Toy Horse

Horse Pattern By TFC Folk Art

The doll is made from calico, clean rag stuffed and aged for the time worn look we all love so much. Her legs are made from black calico giving the impression she is wearing stockings. The dress is made from wool with a contrasting wool band hand sewn in place and around the neck is a plain calico collar. Underneath her dress she also wears a pair of plain calico loons (see pic below).

The horse is made from onsaburg, clean rag stuffed, painted, sanded and finally aged. I used sisal for the mane and tail and small sticks for legs. The pattern from TFC Folk Art is actually one for a horse pull toy, for this piece I eliminated the stand and just used the pattern for the horse body.

The doll & horse come as a complete set with the doll measuring approx 15 inches in overall length (8.5 inches high when seated) and the horse measures approx 8 x 5 inches.

Colonial Spool Doll

The Colonial Spool Doll body is made from calico, sewn, stuffed and aged. The bonnet is made from calico and the shirt is made from pre-aged calico bought from America. The shirt is cut from three pieces of fabric and at the back neck area it has a hemmed opening with a small button sewn at the top. The full skirt is made from Scottish Wool Tweed and the waist band is cut from dark brown wool felt with a length of jute fastened around the outside. She is mounted onto an antique beehive bobbin and overall she stands approx 16.5 inches high.

Another thoroughly enjoyable few days spent sewing in the workroom and the first piece to come out this week is this wonderful pair of Witches Boots and matching Bag.

The boots are made from all cotton fabrics, sewn, stuffed, painted and aged for a wonderful time worn look

. . . . they are joined with a piece of a rusty wire and have a paper and fabric tag with "E. Worth, Cordwainer, Salem's Finest" printed onto the tag.

Overall the boots measure approx 18" long and 9.5" wide.

The bag is made from Honey & Me Black Cat fabric all the way from the US . . . .

. . . . in the bag are some large cinnamon sticks, a few small sprays of sweet annie, some dried leaves from the flowers produced off our palm tree and a "Witcheries" aged paper tag. Overall the bag measures approx 8.5" wide and 16" long.

This one is made from cotton fabric, painted and aged with a cinnamon stick for a stalk, decorative spanish moss and grubbyed muslin tied around the stork. The leaves are grunged wool felt. Overall Pumpkin measures approx 7" wide and stands approx 6" high.

The last piece to come out the workroom is this set comprising a pair of Magical Witches Shoes and Bag, I have a pair of these shoes and this year I will be hanging them from the shelf in our porch.

The shoes are made from all cotton fabrics, sewn, stuffed, painted and aged . . . .

. . . . each shoe has 5 pairs of small matt black beads hand sewn in place with leather thong laces . . .

. . . . either hang them up or stand them amongst your other fall prims. Each shoe measures approx 14" long and stands 9" high, the overall hanging length is approx 18"

The bag is made from Honey & Me Black Cat fabric all the way from the US . . .

. . . . in the bag are some large cinnamon sticks, a few small sprays of sweet annie, some dried leaves from the flowers produced off our palm tree . . . .

AUTUMN SCARECROW IS SOLD
OOAK Autumn Scarecrow & His Pocket Full Of Crows

I have so enjoyed myself this last week, I didn't realise how just how much I had missed sewing until I got back in the workroom and the first of my offerings is this wonderful Autumn Scarecrow and at 31 inches high is quite an impressive size. Starting at the top, the hat is made from calico, painted and aged with a muslin tie round the brim, poking out from under the hat is scarecrow's straw hair. The head is also made from calico, painted and aged, with black floss eyes, pinch stitch eyebrows and more muslin used for his neck scarf. His coat is made from burlap with straw for arms and a crow resting on the top of his left arm.

At the front of the coat are two pockets . . . .

. . . . in each pocket lies a crow nestled in straw and sweet annie. His belt is made from jute with a small rusty bell on each end.

The wooden base has been decorated with, spanish moss, sweet annie and two pumpkins, with a crow resting on top . . . .

Autumn Scarecrow comes signed and dated.

Farmer Jack Rabbit Pumpkin Harvest

I love how this has turned out, the original pattern shows the rabbit holding a small bucket, as I didn't have one to hand I made a pumpkin for him to hold instead.

Farmer Jack is made from plain calico with his body having been clean rag stuffed. He has floss eyes and sisal whiskers and wears a muslin scarf . .

poking out the top of his trousers is a bunch of raffia. His braces are made from jute, looped round two vintage buttons and his shirt is made from burlap.

Pinned to the front of his trousers is a harvest poem . . .

In his left stick hand he holds the key to his potting shed and in his right stick hand he holds a harvest pumpkin . . . .

Farmer Jack Rabbit measures approx 16 inches long and comes signed and dated
